Share the post "3-step action plan to overcoming the difficulty of putting knowledge into action when marketing your new business"
When you start your new business, you take courses, you do research and you talk to a lot of people about it. Every day you learn so many new things. One of the many things you learn about is marketing. There is so much information about marketing and you try to absorb it all. On every corner there is something new and it promises great results. You want to do and learn it all. You gather information and learn about new ways to market your business. Sometimes you feel like you are full to bursting with new knowledge. I know, I have been there. Once you learned all the necessary parts you need to know in order to market your business, you are cut loose. Now, you stand in the vast sea of knowledge and have to put it into action. Where to start? There is so much to do that it is overwhelming. Does this sound familiar? I am sure each and every entrepreneur has been at this point one time. You got all the knowledge that you need to be successful. How will you put it into action?
The first step to put your knowledge into action is in fact that you need some quiet time. Sit down in a quiet place and get something to write with. Now think about what you ultimately want to achieve with your business. Write it down on a separate piece of paper and put it where you can see it every day. We all veer of track once in a while and it is good to have a reminder about what we want to achieve. Once you are clear on the goal, it is time to start a list of action items on how you can get there.
The second step towards action is to brainstorm a list of all the things that you think you need or want to do. Without judging, just write them down. This is a brainstorming session and everything is allowed. You will automatically put down parts of what you learned and that you have a tendency towards. If you like public speaking, that will come to your mind easily as a marketing tool for your business. After you are done with the list, put it down for the day and do something else. Tomorrow is a new day with a fresh mind.
The third step will be to review and order your list the next day. Look at all the things you have written down. Which ones are possible and which ones aren’t? Which ones can you do and which ones would you need help with? Which ones look the most promising? Order your list accordingly. Look at the top 3 items on your list and break them down into small steps. Write the steps down and schedule each step in your calendar over the next 2 weeks. Stick to the schedule and do it.
Once you have only small tasks to do each day, marketing will not seem like such a challenge anymore. Once you have finished with your scheduled items, make sure that you review the results regularly in order to make it even better. Also, go ahead and schedule the steps for the next 3 items on your list. You will see in no time you have reached your goal.
Hi Wendy,
Great advise. I like that after brainstorming you advise to take a break. This mental break is really important. It allows our subconcious to gather the information it has been collecting and advise our conscious mind on the ideas to follow. Our subconscious mind has been gathering information on the trends it is seeing, the opportunities available to us, our skills, and our desires. It seems to gather all the information and lead us in the direction that will bring us the most success.
Much success to you,
Jodi
I’m an action-taker myself and I know how important a plan can be. One thing to hammer home is “be consistent.” Like you say, if you can do even one task a day when you are first starting out, it’s better than “thinking about” doing something! Nice post!
